What To Do

Emergency First Aid Tips

Follow these steps while seeking immediate professional dental care.

For Toothache:

  • Rinse mouth with warm salt water
  • Use dental floss to remove any trapped food
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed
  • Don't place aspirin directly on the tooth or gum tissue

For Knocked-Out Tooth:

  • Handle the tooth by the crown (top), not the root
  • Rinse gently with water if dirty, but don't scrub
  • Try to reinsert it in the socket if possible
  • If not possible, keep tooth moist in milk or saliva
  • See a dentist within 30 minutes for best chance of saving the tooth

For Dental Abscess:

  • Rinse mouth with mild salt water several times
  • Take over-the-counter pain medication for discomfort
  • Apply cold compress to face to minimize swelling
  • Seek immediate dental care as infections can spread quickly
  • Don't delay treatment or attempt to drain the abscess yourself

For Soft Tissue Injury:

  • Rinse wound gently with warm water
  • Apply pressure with gauze or clean cloth to stop bleeding
  • Apply cold compress to reduce swelling for 5-10 minutes
  • If bleeding doesn't stop after 15 minutes, seek emergency care
  • Don't ignore deep cuts or punctures that may need stitches
